Headline from a CNBC article back in February.
Research firm IHS Markit anticipated that 672,000 fewer vehicles would be produced in the first quarter of 2021 due to the semiconductor shortage, including 250,000 units in the worldβs largest vehicle market, China.
That was before a fire at Japan's Renesas plant...
βWe are concerned that there will be a massive impact on chip supplies,β Hidetoshi Shibata, chief executive of Renesas, said at an online news conference on Sunday. βWe will pursue every means possible to minimise the impact.β
About two-thirds of the affected production was automotive chips, Shibata said. If the facility remains offline for a month, he added, Renesas will lose about Β₯17bn ($156m) in revenue.
Toyota, Honda & Nissan all closed lower on the news.
Toyota is one of Renesa's biggest clients and recently closed factory production in the Czech Republic for two weeks...
